Kintsugi Workshop for Beginners: £55

An introduction to the traditional Japanese craft of Kintsugi, the art of golden repair.

In this workshop you will be guided through the whole process from the initial breakage to gold application using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques resulting in a unique piece of Japanese pottery to take home. A range of ceramics will be available to choose from or you are welcome to bring your own piece with you, whether it be a treasured item that is already broken and in need of repair or a piece you would like to break and transform.

All materials are provided.

There will be time within the class to talk about the history of Kintsugi, shown traditional, specialist methods of reparation that are rarely used in modern Kintsugi and during an interim break there will be refreshments and home made cake.

Kintsugi is a beautiful craft and you will leave feeling it's meditative, therapeutic effects and with lots of new knowledge that may inspire a new hobby...and of course your own piece of Kintsugi pottery. Free parking available on site.

The piece you produce is purely for decoration and display as it is not food safe due to the nature of the metallic powder used.

Introduction to Shibori, Dyeing with Natural Indigo: £68

During this workshop we will learn how to create an indigo dye vat and exploring different Japanese Shibori techniques, a method translating to wring, squeeze or bind, manipulating fabric to produce a pattern.

You will be introduced to Indigo as a natural plant dye derived from Indigofera Tinctoria and how to create a dye vat.

We will be using a non toxic/eco friendly dye vat and organic cotton or silk bamboo cloth which will be dipped, often repeatedly, in the vat to produce a wonderful range of blue hues.

We will explore different Shibori techniques of pole wrapping (Arashi), clamping (Itajime), stitching (Nui) and binding (Kumo) to create fascinating surface pattern designs.

This will be a fun, experimental workshop where you will practise a few different techniques before going on to dye a scarf to take home with you, along with all your samples.

All materials are included but if you have something you'd like to dye, please bring it along (natural fabric only, cotton, linen or silk and please pre wash the item)

Wear suitable clothing that you don't mind getting a bit messy.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and homemade cake will be provided throughout.

Free parking on site.
